Joseph J. Buchino, DMD, MD
Dr. Buchino is the Director of Pathology at Virginia Hospital Center. Dr. Buchino obtained both a master's degree in Pharmacology and a dental degree at The University of Pittsburgh. He is a graduate of The University of Louisville School of Medicine and is board-certified in both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Dr. Buchino is licensed in both Medicine and Dentistry and has a special interest in fine needle aspiration and oral pathology. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pathology at The University of Louisville and an Adjunct Professor of Pathology at Georgetown University. He has published many articles and presented numerous seminars. Dr. Buchino also serves as a consultant for several hospitals and clinics.
Cary O. Poropatich, MD
Dr. Poropatich has directed the Hematology and Microbiology Departments since coming to the Hospital in 1992. She is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University Medical School and is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. She trained at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, and at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She has a special interest in transfusion medicine and hematopathology.
Ellsworth J. Stay, MD
Dr. Staydirects the Anatomic Pathology Department of Virginia Hospital Center. He is a graduate of the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University and is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. He trained in Boston at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and has a special interest in surgical and tumor pathology and cytopathology. Since joining the staff of Virginia Hospital Center in 1978, Dr. Stay has chaired the Tumor Board and Cancer Committee and has been active in teaching and research, especially on the clinico-pathologic features of neoplasia, particularly breast cancer. He has authored more than 20 scientific articles.
Stephanie Soofer, MD
Dr. Soofer directs the Cytology Department and oversees clinical chemistry as well as toxicology. A graduate from The University of Louisville School of Medicine, Dr. Soofer did her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, including a Fellowship in surgical pathology at George Washington University Hospital. She then pursued a Fellowship in cytopathology at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Soofer is board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology as well as Cytopathology, and is a certified Medical Review Officer. She has co-authored a number of scientific papers, predominantly in the areas of gynecologic cytology and head and neck pathology.
Barbara A. Sullivan, MT (ASC), MBA
Ms. Sullivan is Administrative Director of Virginia Hospital Center, Department of Pathology. She received her B.S. in Biology in Medical Technology from SUNY at Stony Brook and earned an M.B.A. from Hofstra University. Ms. Sullivan began the Reference Laboratory and the Corporate Drug Testing Program at the Hospital in 1988. In 1994, she assumed the position of Laboratory Manager and continues to direct the Laboratory's outreach programs.
Patti Innis, MLT (ASCP)
Ms. Innis is Coordinator for the Reference Laboratory at Virginia Hospital Center. She earned her degree in Medical Laboratory Technology in 1980, and received certification from ASCP and HHS. Ms. Innis has technical experience in all areas of the clinical laboratory in hospital settings as well as commercial laboratories. After supervising the Blood Donor Center for several years, she assumed her current position in 1994.
